A West Virginia School of Excellence and a Blue Ribbon School, Weir Middle School serves over 700 students in grades 5-8 as part of the Hancock County School System. Recent initiatives include an Accelerated Reader Program in which students spend 60 minutes per day reading and a school wide writing event to improve skills specified in the WV Writing Assessment Rubric. We are also a pilot school for a Character Education Program that promotes responsibility, respect, caring, trustworthiness, citizenship, and fairness. Our partner in education, Newbrough Photo, recognizes students who exemplify these traits each month. Other business partners who offer support throughout the year are Wes Banco and Eat-n-Park.  Teachers and high school students serve in our After School Attention Program, which targets students who have not completed homework or class work assignments correctly and on time.
